ANC has shortlisted Nomusa MaDube-Ncube and Bheki Cele to replace eThekwini mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda.

The race for eThekwini’s new mayor is heating up, with a fight within the ANC over who will run the province’s largest municipality.

According to IOL, the ANC has shortlisted former KZN Premier Nomusa MaDube-Ncube and retired Police Minister Bheki Cele to replace eThekwini leader Mxolisi Kaunda.

Names added to former Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Cyril. Sources say the ANC decided on these names because of their experience in government.

ANC KZN spokesperson Mafika Mndebele said they had sent three names to the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House in Johannesburg.

“They will conduct the work of the party internally. The ANC will then select a candidate. “It is time to announce the name. We do not want to give any names to the media at this time because it could cause division within the ANC,” she said.

 

Cele was a former ANC leader in eThekwini and ran a powerful family alongside the late secretary John Mchunu.

The Position race is said to be a three-horse race between Cyril Xaba, former Police Minister Bheki Cele and former Prime Minister Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

If they believe he leads. He has been an ANC Member of Parliament for KwaZulu-Natal since 1994 and became MEC for Agriculture in 2014.

The ANC has ruled out the possibility of the new leader being sworn in at Tuesday’s council meeting as expected. He said he was waiting for the outcome of the discussion.

The process of electing a new leader caused great concern within and outside the ANC. The ANC in the eThekwini region said the provincial ANC leadership had not been consulted on the matter.
